Artist Statement

There is something about the line between atmosphere and earth that attracts my eye. Long shadows, glowing hillsides and wisps of clouds. Old walls with layers of paint chipped away by time, all of these, a force inviting me to pause and absorb their magic.

Recuerdos [recollections] seems an appropriate word to describe what I paint. Places I’ve been and landscapes I’ve walked through. Some places resonate more than others, stored or sketched until I’m compelled to commit them to a painting. I revisit them many times in my mind before this happens. I have no interest in painting a facsimile of what I see, but rather the way I remember it. I’ve been told that my landscapes are dreamlike; a result of painting from memory.

My abstract work is a natural segue of my painting from memory. I treat art as poetry and music, elevated to it’s own sphere of invention. These paintings become my recordings of places seen and emotions felt. They are patterns that intersect my thoughts and become translated as color, shape and movement. Whether a landscape, world event or my grandfathers favorite blanket, I am inspired to tell the visual story.
